Ukraine Sets Clear Deadline for EU Accession Talks
In a televised address on June 4, President Volodymyr Zelenskiy reaffirmed Ukraine’s commitment to the European Union (EU) accession process, announcing a detailed schedule for forthcoming negotiations. The timetable follows the EU’s rotating presidency, which began preparing to open talks on the first chapter—rule‑of‑law and democratic standards—after discussions in Cyprus.
Zelenskiy highlighted that Ukraine has adhered to the agreed milestones and expects the opening of negotiating clusters in June. He emphasized that the nation has completed its preparatory work, stressing that the next step rests with the EU. The president also referenced talks with Hungarian authorities, noting that an agreement on the rights of Ukraine’s 100,000‑strong ethnic Hungarian community was pivotal for Budapest’s support of the country’s membership bid.
Beyond accession, Ukraine will continue daily exchanges with EU officials, focusing on boosting air defences, synchronising sanctions against Russia, and advancing joint arms production. Zelenskiy stressed that these discussions are crucial for maintaining momentum and keeping Ukraine on a clear path toward EU integration.
With the resolution of key political hurdles and a firm timetable set, Ukraine signals its determination to cement Western values and secure its future within Europe after more than four years of conflict.
