U.S. Navy adds carrier strike group and thousands of troops to Middle East ahead of midterm elections

Approximately 9,000 additional sailors and Marines deployed aboard the USS Theodore Roosevelt carrier strike group and the USS Makin Island amphibious ready group in the Persian Gulf in late October, bringing the U.S. naval presence in the region to more than 20,000 personnel and three aircraft carriers.

A senior military official told the Daily Caller News Foundation that the buildup “could precede an intensification of the Iran war after the November 3, 2026, midterm elections.” The official added, “Things are about to get spicy.”

“Of course this buildup could be a direct preparation for already planned actions,” said Steve Bucci, a retired Army colonel and visiting fellow at the Heritage Foundation’s Phillip N. Truluck Center for Leadership Development.

Barak Seener, an associate research fellow at the Henry Jackson Society, warned that Iran’s attempts to create its own deterrence “will merely contribute to greater escalation and another round of conflict, which is inevitable.” He asked, “The only question is when – before or after the midterms?”

U.S. aerial refueling flights over the Middle East rose roughly 50 percent per day during the first two weeks of October compared with September, and military transport aircraft activity also increased, according to an open‑source flight‑tracking analysis.

In addition to the carrier groups, the United States moved two Patriot missile batteries to the region—one each to Saudi Arabia and Qatar—to protect energy infrastructure against renewed hostilities.

“I don’t believe that President Trump is taking any options off the table,” said Alex Welz, senior research associate for the Middle East and North Africa at the Heritage Foundation.

Polls show the conflict is a top voting issue for 64 percent of respondents, while 69 percent say the war has not been worth fighting and 71 percent disapprove of President Trump’s handling of the situation.

The deployment adds to an existing fleet that already includes the USS George H.W. Bush and USS George Washington carrier strike groups, marking the first time since April that three carrier groups could operate concurrently in the region.

U.S. officials say the force posture is intended to deter further Iranian aggression while keeping diplomatic channels open, but analysts caution that the visible escalation may prompt Iran to act before the elections.
