Trump unveils 15‑month overhaul of East Potomac Golf Links amid court fight
President Donald Trump announced on Sunday a finalized plan to overhaul the East Potomac Golf Links in Washington, D.C., with construction slated to begin on November 15 and a projected completion timeline of fifteen months.
The redesign, prepared with renowned golf‑course architect Tom Fazio, is intended to keep the course open to the public while elevating it to a level capable of hosting major tournaments such as the U.S. Open and the PGA Championship. Trump said the project would generate jobs and a “tremendously positive Economic Development impact” for the capital region.
“When completed, it will be open to the public while, at the same time, designed to the highest level of golf,” Trump wrote in a social‑media post.
The administration frames the overhaul as part of a March 2025 executive order to make the District “Safe and Beautiful,” linking the golf‑course renovation to broader beautification projects.
Legal obstacles have already emerged. U.S. District Judge Ana Reyes extended a temporary restraining order that bars further tree removal through October 26, after finding the plaintiffs likely to succeed on claims that the government failed to satisfy federal environmental‑review requirements.
Judge Reyes said the plaintiffs “were likely to succeed on their claim that the government failed to comply with federal environmental‑review requirements.”
Preservationists argue the removal of roughly 400 trees by National Park Service crews over a recent weekend violated the court’s order, while the Justice Department maintains the cuts were part of historic restoration work already authorized.
Attorney General Stanley Woodward Jr. has moved to disqualify Judge Reyes, accusing her of bias, and the Department of the Interior is preparing to testify at an upcoming evidentiary hearing on the pending preliminary injunction.
With the start date for construction approaching, the next step will be the court’s decision on whether the administration can proceed while the environmental challenges are resolved.
