Starlink Mobile secures 800 MHz spectrum for indoor coverage, pending FCC approval

SpaceX announced on Oct. 8, 2026 that its Starlink Mobile service has secured licenses for 800 MHz of low‑frequency spectrum in the United States, a move described by Elon Musk as the last critical piece needed to provide complete phone coverage, including signals that can penetrate walls.

The spectrum acquisition, announced via a post on X that quoted investor Sawyer Merritt, is intended to improve indoor cellular service by allowing Starlink Mobile to combine its satellite‑to‑mobile transmissions with an advanced terrestrial deployment. The company says the new airwaves are compatible with existing handsets and will enable seamless connectivity everywhere.

The deal still awaits approval from the Federal Communications Commission. If cleared, the FCC would permit Starlink to use the spectrum directly, rather than leasing it through an arrangement with existing carriers, a waiver the agency recently granted alongside approval for SpaceX to launch 15,000 satellites operating in the 2‑gigahertz band.

Analysts view the acquisition as a strategic step that could place Starlink Mobile in direct competition with established carriers such as Verizon, AT&T and T‑Mobile. UBS analyst John Hodulik noted that while regulatory approval appears likely, the broader impact on near‑term wireless industry fundamentals may be limited as SpaceX still needs to build extensive ground‑based infrastructure, including cell sites and fiber connections.

Industry reaction was immediate. Business Insider reported that T‑Mobile’s stock fell more than 11 % in after‑hours trading following the announcement, while Verizon and AT&T each dropped about 6.6 %. Musk called the spectrum deal a “very big deal,” emphasizing its role in closing a technical gap for the company’s mobile ambitions.

Despite the optimism, experts caution that scaling a hybrid satellite‑terrestrial network will take time. Verizon’s CEO Dan Schulman, speaking at a recent conference, acknowledged the long‑term risk posed by satellite providers but said no discernible impact on broadband growth has been observed yet.

The next milestone for Starlink Mobile is FCC approval of the spectrum purchase. Once granted, SpaceX plans to roll out the terrestrial component of its network, potentially accelerating the timeline for nationwide indoor coverage. The company has not disclosed a specific launch schedule, but industry observers expect pilot deployments in select markets before a broader rollout.
