River Waveney Land Purchase Protects Suffolk Waterside
River Waveney Land Purchase Protects Suffolk Waterside
Mid‑Suffolk District Council has bought 2.5 acres along the River Waveney at Palgrave for £25,000, securing the strip of land from future development and laying the groundwork for a nature‑focused revitalisation project.
Cabinet member for environment Tim Weller explained that the council’s goal is to improve wildlife habitat and expand public access to the river. The parcel is part of the River Waveney Trust’s "River Access for All" programme, which seeks to reconnect communities with the river’s heritage.
Today the site is covered in trees and scrub and sits beside a public right of way that runs from Palgrave to Diss. The council will create glade areas, control invasive Himalayan balsam, and attract a range of insects, pollinators, birds, mammals, trees and plants.
With a focus on nature recovery, the council’s new biodiversity work aligns with the district’s broader ambition to thrive economically, culturally, socially and environmentally. The project is expected to inspire local volunteer participation and keep the area open for community enjoyment while protecting the local ecosystem.
Residents and visitors can look forward to a refreshed green corridor that supports both wildlife and recreation. By securing and improving this land, Mid‑Suffolk District Council demonstrates a commitment to sustainable land use and community engagement in the heart of rural Suffolk.
