Rangers dominate Lightning 5-1 in home opener, Shesterkin scores first goalie goal
The New York Rangers opened their 2026‑27 season at Madison Square Garden on Oct. 2, 2026, defeating the Tampa Bay Lightning 5‑1.
The victory set an early tone for the Rangers, who had struggled at home the previous year. Scoring depth and solid goaltending helped exorcise last season’s Madison Square Garden woes and gave fans confidence heading into the 84‑game schedule.
Goals came from Mika Zibanejad, Pavel Dorofeyev, Eeli Tolvanen, Gabe Perreault and, in a historic moment, goaltender Igor Shesterkin, who scored on an empty net in the third period to become the first Rangers goalie to do so. Dorofeyev contributed two goals, the first assisted by J.T. Miller and the second on an odd‑man rush set up by Oliver Bjorkstrand. Tolvanen’s early second‑period marker and Perreault’s late‑game deflection rounded out the tally.
Captain J.T. Miller reflected on the win, saying the team owed a performance to fans after last year’s home‑ice shortcomings and emphasizing that the Rangers finally gave themselves a fresh start.
All four forward lines generated chances while the three defensive pairings limited the Lightning’s opportunities. New York killed six power‑play chances and held the Lightning to a single goal, a deflection off Noah Laba’s stick that followed a Nikita Kucherov pass. Shesterkin made 23 saves and earned a standing ovation as fans chanted “Igor’s better.”
The bench swarmed the ice as Shesterkin’s empty‑net goal sealed the statement win, and the celebration underscored the shift in the franchise’s home performance narrative.
With momentum building, the Rangers look to translate the opening night success into a sustained push for a playoff spot as the season unfolds.
