Qantas Sets October 2027 Launch for Historic Sydney‑London Non‑Stop Flight
Qantas Announces Historic Sydney‑London Non‑Stop Service
Qantas has announced a landmark development for international travel: the inaugural nonstop flight from Sydney, Australia to London, United Kingdom is scheduled for launch in October 2027. The airline revealed its first custom‑built Airbus A350‑1000ULR at the Airbus facility in Toulouse, confirming the final stage of its Project Sunrise initiative.
The new aircraft is an ultra‑long‑range variant of the A350, equipped with an additional fuel tank that extends its range by roughly 1,000 nautical miles. This modification enables the jet to complete the 22‑hour journey without any intermediate stops, a technical breakthrough that reshapes the concept of long‑haul aviation.
Inside the cabin, Qantas has deliberately reduced the seating capacity to 238 passengers to provide greater comfort on the marathon flight. The configuration includes a first‑class suite with an 80‑inch flat bed, a business‑class section with 52 suites, premium economy, and economy seating. Dedicated wellness zones feature lighting that gradually aligns with the destination’s time zone and space for passengers to stretch, helping to mitigate jet lag and improve overall health during the flight.
Vanessa Hudson, Qantas CEO, emphasized that the project reflects the airline’s long‑standing mission to overcome the “tyranny of distance.” She highlighted that the airline’s experience with other ultra‑long routes, such as Perth to London and Auckland to New York, has already demonstrated strong customer satisfaction and commercial viability. The new service is expected to attract premium and time‑sensitive travelers willing to pay a premium for the convenience of a direct connection.
The rollout includes an order for 12 specially modified A350‑1000 aircraft, with the first delivery slated for next year. The aircraft’s design prioritises fuel efficiency and passenger well‑being, aligning with Qantas’s broader goals of sustainable aviation and environmental responsibility. By eliminating stopovers, the airline also reduces landing‑fee expenditures and overall carbon emissions per passenger compared with traditional multi‑leg itineraries.
With the launch date set, Qantas is poised to redefine global connectivity, offering a seamless link between two of the world’s major economic hubs. The service not only promises a faster travel experience but also underscores the airline’s commitment to innovation, health‑focused design, and the continued evolution of long‑distance air travel.
