Pope Leo XIV returns to Vatican, thanks faithful and urges Christians to live without compromise
Pope Leo XIV made his first public appearance at the Vatican on Oct. 18, 2026, delivering the traditional Angelus prayer from the window of his study overlooking St. Peter’s Square, just five days after lung‑cancer surgery.
The brief but solemn address marked the pontiff’s swift return to public life, underscored the centenary of World Mission Sunday, and delivered a clear call for Christians to live without compromise, emphasizing the freedom found in faith.
On Oct. 13 the 71‑year‑old Pope underwent surgery at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital to remove the lower lobe of his right lung after doctors discovered an adenocarcinoma, the most common form of lung cancer. He was discharged on Oct. 17, telling reporters he was “much better” and expressing gratitude to the surgeons, nurses and staff who cared for him.
During the Angelus, Leo thanked the thousands gathered for their prayers and singled out the medical team for their dedication. He then reflected on Jesus’ teaching from Matthew 22:15‑21 – “Give therefore to the emperor the things that are the emperor’s, and to God the things that are God’s” – and urged believers to “live without compromise, free from selfish ambitions and unjust motives, seeking above all the Kingdom of God and his righteousness.”
Members of the crowd vocalized their relief. Claire Holland, a visitor from Jacksonville, Florida, said she felt “very blessed” to witness the Pope’s return, while Alain Kalembu of the Democratic Republic of Congo praised the Pope’s “strong, determined” spirit. Other pilgrims echoed similar sentiments, describing the moment as a “miracle” and a testament to the power of collective prayer.
The day also marked the 100th World Mission Sunday, a celebration launched by Pope Pius XI in 1926. To commemorate the centenary, Pope Leo granted a plenary indulgence through the Apostolic Penitentiary, inviting the faithful to fulfill the usual conditions of confession, communion and prayer for the Pope’s intentions, and to unite in praying the Rosary for global evangelization. The Vatican’s annual theme, “One in Christ, United in Mission,” was reiterated in his remarks.
Looking ahead, Leo will embark on a Latin‑American pastoral tour from Nov. 6 to Nov. 17, visiting Uruguay, Argentina and Peru. His surgeon, Dr. Stefano Margaritora, confirmed there are “no clinical reasons” to postpone the trip and expects the Pope to be fully recovered within ten days.
