Odell Beckham Jr. joins Vikings practice squad, dons No. 9 in nod to Justin Jefferson

Odell Beckham Jr. signed a one‑year veteran minimum contract with the Minnesota Vikings on Wednesday, Oct. 8, 2026, and was added to the team’s practice squad.

Beckham announced he would wear No. 9, a number previously worn by rookie quarterback J.J. McCarthy before the player was traded to the University of Michigan after a season‑ending injury to Jaxson Dart. Beckham joked that his choice honored teammate Justin Jefferson, saying, “The reason I picked 9 is Justin [Jefferson] got half his game from me.”

The former New York Giants receiver joins a Vikings receiving unit that has been shorthanded since Jefferson missed a Week 3 game with a sprained ankle. Jefferson’s limited practice participation and the modest production from other receivers—including Jordan Addison’s 11 catches for 163 yards and T.J. Hockenson’s 195 yards on 22 receptions—have left the Vikings searching for depth.

Beckham’s connection to Jefferson goes beyond the field. The two share a friendship, and Beckham spent a season at LSU (2011‑13) playing quarterback for Jefferson’s older brother, Jordan. Beckham recalled the bond, noting, “It’s amazing what he’s done… it’ll be amazing to see him up close and personal.”

Before joining Minnesota, Beckham’s 2026 season with the New York Giants was brief. He appeared in three games, logged 20 snaps, and recorded no receptions on a single target before being released on Sept. 29.

The Vikings’ move adds a high‑profile name to a practice squad that already includes receiver Jeshaun Jones. While it remains uncertain whether Beckham will be activated for game day, his veteran experience and chemistry with Jefferson could provide a boost as the Vikings prepare for a Week 5 matchup against the New Orleans Saints.
