NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani accuses Israel of genocide on Oct. 7 anniversary, faces backlash

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani on October 7, 2026, marked the third anniversary of the Hamas attack by accusing Israel of committing genocide, prompting swift condemnation from Israeli officials and supporters.

The statement intensifies an ongoing dispute over how the war in Gaza is characterized, a debate that influences diplomatic relations, humanitarian aid and public opinion in the United States.

“This day is profoundly painful for so many New Yorkers. It marks three years since the horrific war crimes of October 7,” Mamdani wrote on X. “On that day, Hamas killed more than 1,100 Israelis and abducted 251 others.”

He then turned to Israel’s response, asserting that “the Israeli government’s devastating, ongoing genocide in Gaza” has killed more than 74,000 Palestinians, including over 21,000 children, and that “even since the so‑called ceasefire, more than 1,400 Palestinians have been killed.” Mamdani added that the suffering has deepened with each Israeli bomb dropped on ambulances, drone strikes on residential buildings, and turned‑away food shipments.

Israeli officials and pro‑Israel groups denounced the mayor’s remarks as inflammatory, calling the genocide label a mischaracterization of legitimate self‑defense and a harmful escalation of rhetoric. Several Israeli diplomats issued statements urging “responsible discourse” and warning that such accusations could undermine peace efforts.

The controversy comes amid a broader split among world capitals. While many Muslim‑majority nations have echoed the genocide description, the United States, Germany and several European states have rejected it. The International Criminal Court has already issued an arrest warrant for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and South Africa has lodged a genocide case against Israel before the International Court of Justice.

City officials have not yet indicated whether they will distance themselves from Mamdani’s remarks, and diplomatic channels are expected to see further statements as the anniversary approaches.
