Northwestern opens $875 million Ryan Field with 34‑13 win over Penn State
Northwestern University opened its $875 million Ryan Field stadium on Oct. 2, 2026, with a 34‑13 victory over Penn State in the Wildcats’ first home game.
The win, highlighted by a prolific ground game, gave the Wildcats 506 total yards, including 413 rushing yards, and moved them to a 3‑1 overall record and 1‑1 in the Big Ten.
Running back Caleb Komolafe set a career best with 188 rushing yards and a touchdown, while teammate Joseph Himon II added a career‑high 162 yards and two scores on just ten carries. Quarterback Aidan Chiles opened the scoring with a two‑yard keeper, and kicker Jackson Kleather capped the opening drive with a 50‑yard field goal.
Penn State answered with an eight‑yard rushing touchdown by Carson Hansen, but Northwestern quickly responded with touchdowns by Himon and Chiles, extending the lead to 31‑7 before halftime.
The second half saw Northwestern maintain control as Penn State’s quarterback Rocco Becht threw an interception and kicker Ryan Barker missed a 45‑yard field‑goal attempt that would have narrowed the deficit.
Ryan Field, described as a “mini‑modern NFL stadium” with premium amenities such as a European‑style “Wildcat Wall,” replaces the original venue on the same site, marking 100 years since the former field opened. The facility’s advanced features are expected to enhance recruiting and NIL (Name, Image, Likeness) opportunities, with boosters reportedly positioned to offer NIL deals comparable to half of Ohio State’s $50‑55 million budget.
Northwestern’s next Big Ten test comes on Oct. 10 when it hosts Ball State, giving the Wildcats another chance to showcase the new stadium to fans and prospective players.
