Nine killed in Erie, Pennsylvania mass shooting as suspect found dead

Nine people, including at least two children, were killed in a mass shooting at a residence on Perry Street in Erie, Pennsylvania, on the evening of October 9, 2026, and the suspected shooter was found dead inside the home after a SWAT team surrounded the property.

The incident began when a ShotSpotter alert reported gunfire shortly before 5 p.m., prompting police to dispatch officers to the 700‑block of Perry Street. Witnesses said they saw a man firing a weapon outside the house before he entered.

First‑responding officers discovered the bodies of two women lying in the street outside the residence. Inside the home, investigators found additional victims, including children, and the suspected gunman, who had apparently sustained a self‑inflicted gunshot wound.

Erie Police Chief Rick Lorah described the scene as “one of the most difficult and heartbreaking scenes our officers and investigators have ever encountered,” adding that “the loss of life is devastating, and the circumstances we are working through are deeply disturbing.” He emphasized that there was no ongoing threat to the public and that investigators would not speculate about motive.

Mayor Daria Devlin issued a joint statement with city officials describing the event as a “terrible tragedy,” and expressed that “our thoughts are with the victims, their loved ones, and everyone impacted by tonight’s tragedy.”

Governor Josh Shapiro also released a statement, saying, “My heart breaks for this family,” and noting that he and his wife Lori were praying for the victims and the broader Erie community.

Law enforcement officials clarified that the deaths occurred before police arrived on the scene, and that sounds heard during the tactical response were from flash‑bang devices rather than additional gunfire. The SWAT team obtained a warrant before entering the home, and the investigation remains active as authorities seek to determine the shooter’s motive and any possible connections among the victims.

City and state officials have pledged continued support for the grieving community, and investigators are urging residents to share any information that may aid the ongoing inquiry.
