Milwaukee half‑marathon runner dies after collapsing near finish line

John Meise, 36, a Wisconsin father of four, died after collapsing just shy of the finish line during the Milwaukee Lakefront Marathon half‑marathon on Sunday morning.

The incident occurred near the 13‑mile mark, less than 600 feet from the race’s end, when a fellow runner saw Meise fall to the ground. The runner immediately stepped in to administer aid while emergency medical technicians arrived and provided lifesaving care before transporting him on a stretcher to Froedtert Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Meise, who had no known medical history, was participating in his first half‑marathon. He left behind his wife, Lauren, and four children—Mason, 11; Owen, 8; Lucy, 4; and Isla, 1. He earned a bachelor’s degree in journalism from the University of Wisconsin‑Milwaukee and worked as a brand and digital‑marketing manager for QuadMed.

"He was literally the best dad, and husband and best to everyone in his world," family friend Stacy Horneck said. "He loved doing everything with his family. To say they’re heartbroken is an understatement. He was so funny, and intelligent and talented."

Race organizers issued sincere condolences and reiterated that the event follows established medical and emergency‑response protocols, emphasizing participant safety as a central priority. The Milwaukee County Medical Examiner’s Office has not yet determined a cause of death.

Although the marathon drew a record‑breaking turnout—about 8,000 registrations and roughly 6,000 runners on Sunday—it marked the first fatality in its 44‑year history, prompting calls for a review of on‑course medical resources and response times.

Organizers said they will work with local health officials to assess the circumstances and consider additional safety measures for future races.
