Michael Goessling discovers Michael McDonald is his biological father

Michael Goessling, a St. Louis man adopted through Catholic Charities, told Fox News Digital on Oct. 3, 2026 that five‑time Grammy winner Michael McDonald, lead singer of the Doobie Brothers, is his biological father.

The discovery followed a May 6, 2025 letter from an attorney representing Goessling’s birth mother, who had spent three decades searching for her son. In a three‑hour lunch that fell on Goessling’s 58th birthday, he met his biological mother and learned that his mysterious “Mike” on the phone was the famed musician.

During their first conversation, Goessling heard that “Mike” was touring and would stop in St. Louis on Sept. 4 at a venue he believed was called “Hollywood.” He recognized the Hollywood Casino Amphitheater and discovered the Doobie Brothers were scheduled to play that night. The pieces clicked, and he asked, “Are you Michael McDonald?” to which the singer replied, “Yep, afraid so.”

Goessling recounted the moment as “crazy” and “unreal,” saying he still wakes up sometimes thinking it was a dream. He also noted that he had watched McDonald perform in concert twice—in the 1980s and again in the early 1990s—without ever realizing the man onstage was his own father.

After the phone call, McDonald left Goessling a voicemail that made the singer’s unmistakable voice instantly recognizable. Goessling described the emotional impact as a “tsunami” of feelings, prompting him to thank his adoptive parents for a “charmed” childhood while also expressing gratitude to his biological family for never giving up the search.

Goessling’s adoptive parents, Paul and Kay Goessling, had raised him with four other children. Paul died shortly before Christmas 2024 after a battle with Parkinson’s disease. Kay’s reaction to the letter was immediate; she wept, called it a miracle, and insisted on meeting Goessling’s biological mother. The two families have since merged, sharing photos, laughter, and frequent text messages.

Beyond the personal reunion, Goessling hopes the story amplifies the conversation about adoption. He described adoption as a “blessing,” noting that his Catholic upbringing taught him to view his adoption as evidence of deep love rather than abandonment. He now seeks to “elevate the adoption narrative” and encourage others to celebrate the practice.

Father and son now speak regularly, with Goessling telling McDonald, “I love you, and thank you for everything.” He added that the experience has filled his life with gratitude, saying, “My cup overflows.”
