Marco Rubio urges Europe to protect Western values in Athens speech

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio delivered a speech on July 10, 2026, from the ancient Acropolis in Athens, warning that the West faces an inflection point and urging European allies to defend their civilizational roots.

Rubio said the threats of the modern era are as real as those of antiquity, declaring, “We are at an inflection point, an inflection point not only in the history of my nation, but an inflection point in the whole of our civilization.” He urged Europe to “awaken from its long slumber and rekindle the fire that was here millennia ago,” calling for a renewal of the virtues born in Greece that later defined the West.

“The story of our civilization is the greatest story ever known to man, and it began here with the first men and women of the West. From them … we can rediscover the virtues—courage and strength—to confront the dangers that we face in our time,” Rubio said.

The speech, described by Overton News as “one of the greatest speeches ever delivered by a Secretary of State” and “Reaganesque,” linked classical references such as Achilles and the Alamo to contemporary concerns about security, energy, and migration.

Rubio also announced a new counter‑terrorism partnership with Greece, emphasizing the country’s role as “a source of stability in an unstable world.” The announcement came amid broader NATO talks, as the Secretary of State continues a three‑nation tour that began in Iceland and will conclude in Portugal.

Demonstrators in Athens, organized by left‑wing groups, gathered to protest Rubio’s visit and U.S. policy in the Middle East, with some chanting “American killers!” The protests were reported in multiple Greek cities and were largely contained by police.

When asked about ongoing allegations of misconduct against U.S. Ambassador Kimberly Guilfoyle, Rubio declined to comment, stating only that the embassy was “doing a great job.”

Rubio’s remarks echo earlier calls at the Munich Security Conference to confront what he described as a decline in Western democratic values, and he framed the speech as a “great renewal of the Western spirit” stretching from ancient Athens to the founding of the American Republic.

Rubio will continue his NATO itinerary with a stop in Portugal on Thursday, where he is expected to discuss further cooperation on security and energy issues.
