Marblehead High School football star Owen Coyne dies of sudden brain hemorrhage

Seventeen‑year‑old Owen Coyne, a senior wide receiver and three‑sport athlete at Marblehead High School in Marblehead, Massachusetts, died on Oct. 4, 2026 after suffering a sudden brain hemorrhage that was not caused by an impact on the football field.

The loss has focused attention on health monitoring for young athletes and the importance of rapid emergency response in high school sports programs.

According to his mother, Angela Paradise, Owen began experiencing severe headaches after Marblehead’s first game of the season on Sept. 10. He spent two weeks in the hospital before the hemorrhage proved fatal, though doctors said the condition was unrelated to any in‑game hit.

"It is with profound sadness and indescribable grief that we share that Owen passed away after a sudden brain hemorrhage," Paradise told the Marblehead Current. "Owen was the sweetest soul you’ll ever meet – truly a gift!"

Marblehead Public Schools Superintendent John Robidoux expressed the community’s sorrow, urging residents to send prayers and offering counseling services for students and staff during the grieving period.

Owen had committed to play football at Williams College, and Williams head coach Mark Raymond called him "an outstanding student‑athlete" whose death deeply saddened the college community.

In addition to football, Owen participated in baseball and track, and was an avid boater and sailing instructor. He was a registered organ donor; his family announced that his organs will help save five lives.

The scheduled game against Danvers was canceled, and Marblehead High School announced ongoing counseling support for anyone affected by the tragedy. The school plans to hold a memorial service and will continue to provide resources as the community processes the loss.
