Man shot dead at Midtown Manhattan subway station on Oct. 17
A man was shot and killed on the northbound E‑train platform of the 53rd Street–7th Avenue subway station in Midtown Manhattan at approximately 12:21 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 17, 2026.
The incident follows an argument that escalated into gunfire, according to NYPD officials. Witnesses described a chaotic scene, with one bystander hearing three rapid “pop” sounds as the train doors opened and another recalling about five shots spaced roughly eight seconds apart.
Hassen Pinchback, an eyewitness from Orlando, said, “When the train doors opened, that’s when you heard pop pop pop,” and added that commuters began rushing in what he called “a stampede.” A female bystander performed chest compressions on the victim until police arrived, urging the victim to “hang in there.”
Another witness, identified only as Miller, told investigators that she and her daughter were inside the subway car when the shots rang out. She said the shooter looked directly at her before continuing to fire and that she began praying, stating, “I’m a very strong Christian, Jesus saved us 100%.”
Local commuter Mauricio Marroquin observed the victim, describing him as a man in his 30s wearing a blazer, “like he was coming from work.” Marroquin noted the shooter fled on foot northbound along 7th Avenue. Police responded quickly, provided emergency medical aid, and transported the victim to Bellevue Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The NYPD has classified the case as a homicide and is seeking information from the public. No arrests have been announced, and the investigation remains ongoing.
