Kristi Noem leaves role as Shield of the Americas envoy, stays on as senior adviser
Kristi Noem’s appointment as special envoy to the Shield of the Americas coalition expired in September 2026, and she will stay at the State Department as a senior adviser to Deputy Secretary Christopher Landau.
The change ends her formal diplomatic role in the hemispheric security initiative but keeps her involved in the same portfolio, signaling continuity in the administration’s approach to regional cooperation.
Noem was named special envoy in March after her tenure as Homeland Security secretary ended amid criticism, becoming the first person to hold the post. The Shield of the Americas, announced by the Trump administration on March 7, is a coalition of Caribbean and Latin American nations intended to coordinate economic stability, anti‑cartel action and broader security matters.
During her short tenure, Noem’s public activity was limited to a handful of meetings. She met Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa on March 25 and again on September 22, held discussions with Ecuadorian and Colombian diplomats in Washington, and participated in sessions on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
President Donald Trump publicly praised Noem in a September meeting with Noboa, saying she had done a “really terrific job.” A State Department official confirmed the envoy status expiration and the transition to a senior advisory role.
The Shield of the Americas coalition, described by officials as the largest and most powerful alliance for economic and national security in the Western Hemisphere, continues to focus on cooperation across the region despite Noem’s title change.
The restructuring came shortly after the resignation of Kimberly Guillifoyle from a separate envoy position, underscoring a broader realignment of Trump‑appointed diplomatic roles.
Noem will remain engaged with the Shield of the Americas portfolio as a senior adviser, though the State Department did not provide additional details on her forthcoming responsibilities.
