Finnish Police Probe Subsea Cable Damage

On June 5, 2026, Finnish authorities announced the identification of four individuals suspected of damaging two subsea telecommunication cables that run from Helsinki across the Gulf of Finland to Estonia. This incident follows a series of power, telecom and gas pipeline disruptions in the Baltic region that began after Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022.

The cables were damaged last year, affecting both commercial and consumer communications. Finnish police seized the cargo ship Fitburg on December 31, 2025, while it was traveling from Russia to Israel on suspicion of causing the damage. The vessel was anchored in the harbor of Kirkkonummi, Finland.

Investigations point to four suspects. Three of the four are currently under a travel ban, while a fourth is free pending further inquiry. Prosecutors are reviewing the case for possible charges including aggravated criminal damage and aggravated interference with telecommunications. Police describe the case as involving aggravated criminal damage, attempted aggravated criminal damage and aggravated interference with telecommunications.

Security officials warn that the damaged cables jeopardise key communications infrastructure, and they have increased patrols in the region. NATO has stepped up its presence in the Baltic Sea, deploying frigates, aircraft and naval drones to monitor for further threats.

Finland’s investigation highlights the vulnerabilities of undersea cables that are critical to global data traffic. The Baltic Sea region remains on high alert as authorities work to restore service and prevent future incidents. Prosecutors will announce any charges once the investigation concludes. This remains a developing story that underscores the interconnectedness of infrastructure, security and international relations.
