June 2, 2026 – Pope Leo XIV Names Maria Montserrat Alvarado as Vatican Communications Head

On June 2, 2026 the Vatican announced a sweeping change in its communications hierarchy. Pope Leo XIV named Maria Montserrat Alvarado to succeed Paolo Ruffini as prefect of the Dicastery for Communication, the office that controls the Vatican’s television, radio, online, publishing and newspaper operations. Her appointment is the first time a laywoman has headed a Vatican dicastery, following Pope Francis’s precedent of placing women in key leadership roles.

Alvarado is the Mexican‑American president and chief operating officer of EWTN News, the world’s largest Catholic media organization. Since 2023 she has overseen television, radio, online and publishing platforms in seven languages, guiding a network that reaches millions of viewers and readers globally. Prior to EWTN she held leadership posts at the Becket Fund for Religious Liberty, a U.S. nonprofit that defends church‑state separation.

Her background in international media and public affairs is widely regarded as a strategic fit for the Vatican’s expanding digital agenda. Pope Leo XIV, in a statement accompanying the appointment, emphasized a “missionary perspective” on Catholic media, moving away from traditional top‑down messaging toward a more dynamic and globally engaged outreach.

The new prefect will oversee all official communications for the Holy See, coordinate press relations, and guide apostolic outreach through the Vatican’s extensive media network, which commands one of the largest budgets of any Vatican department. In the months ahead, he will work with Cardinals scheduled for a meeting in early September to reassess the effectiveness of ecclesial communication from a missionary perspective.

Reactions from the Catholic media community have been positive. EWTN’s CEO Michael Warsaw praised Alvarado’s “faithful witness” and noted that her experience would shape EWTN’s outreach at a critical moment as the apostolate pivots deeper into digital engagement. CatholicVote’s president Kelsey Reinhardt welcomed the historic appointment, describing it as a “moment of great joy” and a sign that the United States is experiencing a true Catholic moment.

Alvarado’s mandate also includes ensuring a smooth transition from her predecessor, Paolo Ruffini, who has led the Dicastery since 2018. The transition is scheduled for November 1, and Ruffini will collaborate with Alvarado to maintain continuity in the department’s operations.

The appointment is widely seen as part of a broader reform agenda aimed at increasing transparency, speed, and inclusivity in the Vatican’s communication strategy. With her blend of seasoned media expertise and a clear missionary focus, Alvarado is positioned to reshape how the Holy See engages both believers and the broader global audience.
