Jerrell Jackson identified as suspect in shooting of National Guard member in Washington, D.C.

U.S. Marshals Service officials identified 41‑year‑old Jerrell Jackson as the suspect who shot a National Guard member attempting to break up a street fight in the 400 block of 8th Street SE, Washington, D.C., at approximately 11:15 p.m. on Sunday.

The incident occurred when a group of seven or eight Guard members exited a van near Eastern Market to intervene in a brawl. According to interim D.C. Metropolitan Police Department Chief Jeffrey Carroll, an adult male pulled a firearm and opened fire, striking the Guard member in the leg. Guard personnel returned fire, hitting Jackson in the abdomen.

Both injuries were described as non‑life‑ threatening. The Guard member was treated at a local hospital and released, while Jackson was transported to another facility for medical care. Authorities have withheld the service member’s identity pending the investigation.

Carroll confirmed that three Guard members discharged firearms during the exchange and emphasized that the response was aimed at protecting the public. "The National Guard members told the individual to drop the firearm. He discharged a round at the National Guard members who returned fire," he said.

White House spokeswoman Lauren Bis expressed relief over the Guard member’s recovery, stating, "We are praying this National Guard member has a quick and speedy recovery." She also noted Jackson’s extensive criminal history, which includes two convictions for assaulting police officers, an illegal‑firearm conviction, and multiple parole violations.

Court records reviewed by federal officials show Jackson has faced at least 13 prior criminal cases or arrests in the District dating back to 2004, covering a range of offenses from gun and drug charges to assault and unlawful entry. Some resulted in convictions, while others were dismissed or resolved through diversion programs.

The shooting adds to a series of recent incidents involving National Guard personnel in the capital, a force deployed since August 2025 as part of a federal task force aimed at reducing violent crime. While the task force reports significant drops in certain crime categories, the event highlights the ongoing risks faced by Guard members who intervene in public disturbances.

Law enforcement continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting. No additional suspects have been identified, and authorities have not released further details about potential charges pending against Jackson.
