James Dolan companies give $3 million to super PAC backing Bruce Blakeman
Companies controlled by New York Knicks owner James Dolan donated $3 million to Strong and Safe New York Inc., a super political action committee backing Republican candidate Bruce Blakeman in his race against incumbent Democratic Governor Kathy Hochul.
The contribution highlights the increasing financial influence of high‑profile sports owners in state elections and raises questions about how corporate money may shape the upcoming November 3 gubernatorial contest.
State Board of Elections filings show that the $3 million arrived as three separate $1 million transfers – one each from MSG Entertainment, MSG Sports and Sphere Entertainment Group LLC – all entities linked to Dolan’s business empire.
According to reporting, Dolor Dolan has positioned himself as a leading supporter of “pro‑business and common‑sense” candidates, stepping in where other corporate leaders have not contributed. He also publicly criticized the Partnership for New York City for declining to endorse Blakeman or advocate for lower taxes and stronger economic growth.
The super PAC, which already launched billboards promoting Blakeman and has raised more than $5 million from donors concerned about the state’s cost of living, used the new funds to amplify its messaging ahead of a televised debate on Oct. 13.
During the debate, Blakeman blamed Hochul’s policies for rising utility costs and public‑safety challenges, while Hochul defended her record and highlighted the Republican candidate’s ties to former President Donald Trump. The timing of the donations suggests an effort to bolster Blakeman’s campaign momentum just before the high‑profile showdown.
As the election draws closer, both campaigns are expected to intensify fundraising efforts, and additional contributions from business figures like Dolan could further shape the competitive landscape of the 2026 New York governor’s race.
