Jalen Brunson says he fears opening his 2026 championship hat

Jalen Brunson said on Oct 17, 2026 during an episode of the "Roommates Show" podcast with teammate Josh Hart that he has kept his 2026 NBA championship hat sealed in a bag because he is afraid to open it.

The Knicks' first NBA title in 53 years, secured in June 2026 after defeating the San Antonio Spurs in five games, has been celebrated with parades, ring ceremonies and media appearances, but the star guard admitted the souvenir still sits untouched in storage.

Brunson told Hart, “Mine is still not washed; it’s in the bag, and I’m afraid to open it,” adding that the hat “smells terrible: champagne, sweat, cigars, food, beer, tequila.” He described the scent as a mix of celebration remnants that make the hat seem more like a science‑project than a trophy.

The description resonates with fans who have seen the team’s post‑game celebrations, which featured champagne spraying, locker‑room camaraderie and after‑party festivities that can leave lingering odors on apparel and gear. Brunson’s comment highlights how even prized memorabilia can become a source of discomfort after the euphoria subsides.

In addition to the hat, Brunson recently hosted a season‑opening episode of “Saturday Night Live” and is preparing for the Knicks’ title‑defense campaign, which begins on Tuesday with a home opener against the Philadelphia 76ers at Madison Square Garden. The team will be honored with championship rings and a new banner in the arena’s rafters during that event.

While the championship hat remains in its bag, Brunson said he plans to let it air out and eventually wash it, though no timeline was given. Observers note that many athletes eventually retire or preserve such items, making his hesitation an unusual, light‑hearted footnote to the historic season.

As the Knicks look to defend their crown, the question of when—if ever—Brunson will finally open the sealed hat adds a quirky personal subplot to the franchise’s championship narrative.
