Illegal immigrant arrested in Nevada after traffic stop uncovers 30‑pound fentanyl haul
Federal prosecutors announced Tuesday that 26‑year‑old Francisco Joel Garcia Farias, an illegal immigrant, was taken into custody after a Lincoln County deputy stopped his pickup for speeding on U.S. Highway 93 near Ash Springs, Nevada.
The routine traffic stop turned into a major drug bust when a narcotics‑detection dog alerted officers to the vehicle. A subsequent search uncovered 13 large storage totes holding approximately 30 pounds of suspected fentanyl and 677 pounds of suspected methamphetamine, a combined haul of more than 700 pounds.
First Assistant U.S. Attorney Sigal Chattah said the seizure highlights the staggering volume of illicit narcotics flowing into communities from transnational criminal organizations, noting that the 14 kilograms of fentanyl represent roughly seven million potentially lethal two‑milligram doses—enough to kill more than twice the population of Nevada.
"These staggering quantities reflect a blatant disregard for human life, driven purely by profit," Chattah said.
U.S. Attorney General Todd Blanche added that removing the drugs from the streets prevented a potentially deadly supply from reaching the public, emphasizing that anyone planning to release fentanyl will be prosecuted.
The investigation involved Homeland Security Investigations, the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office, and Homeland Security Task Force partners, demonstrating close coordination between federal and local law‑enforcement agencies.
Garcia Farias faces federal charges of possession with intent to distribute 400 grams or more of a fentanyl mixture and 500 grams or more of a methamphetamine mixture. If convicted, each count carries a mandatory minimum of ten years in prison, a maximum sentence of life, and five years of supervised release.
The case underscores how routine traffic enforcement and trained K‑9 units can disrupt large‑scale drug operations, and federal prosecutors said they will seek an indictment as the investigation proceeds.
