Hayley Williams labels Christian nationalism the greatest threat to U.S. democracy
Paramore lead singer Hayley Williams told a U.S. audience on a September 2026 concert that "the greatest threat to American democracy is Christian nationalism," a remark that quickly generated sharp pushback.
The comment, made moments before she performed the solo track "True Believer," targeted the political ideology rather than Christianity itself, according to the recirculated video clip.
Lisa Cusack, president of the Don’t L.A. My Burbank PAC, criticized the statement to Fox News Digital, saying it ignored Christianity’s influence on the nation’s founding documents and democratic principles. Cusack called the remark "incredibly ignorant," adding that natural law and human rights are historically rooted in Christian thought.
Williams has a history of injecting political commentary into her shows. Earlier in 2024 she warned concertgoers against a return of Donald Trump to the White House, and she has previously shouted slogans such as "F— ICE" and "FREE MOTHERF—— PALESTINE!" during performances, prompting a response from the Department of Homeland Security urging her to recognize federal officers’ service.
The latest declaration adds to a pattern of outspoken activism that includes criticism of former President Trump, immigration enforcement policies, and U.S. involvement in the Gaza conflict. While her fans have praised her willingness to address social issues, opponents argue that politicizing concerts alienates audiences and oversimplifies complex debates.
Fox News Digital reached out to Williams’ publicist for comment but did not receive an immediate response.
Williams’ remarks arrive at a time when religious nationalism remains a contentious topic in American politics, with lawmakers and advocacy groups debating its impact on public policy and civic discourse.
