Gunshots interrupt high school football postgame interview in Pittsburgh

Gunshots were heard at George K. Cupples Stadium in Pittsburgh on Thursday night, forcing a postgame interview to end abruptly and leaving three teenage players with gunshot wounds.

The shots rang out after Westinghouse Academy defeated University Prep 35-0, prompting players and reporters to scramble for cover. Pittsburgh Police Chief Jason Lando said officers inside and outside the stadium were attempting to break up a fight when an individual pulled a firearm and fired multiple rounds.

Three individuals, believed to be teenagers, were taken to local hospitals and are reported to be in stable condition. The stadium was immediately locked down, and metal detectors and a visible police presence had already been in place as a precaution.

Police continue to search for the shooter, who has not been identified and whose presence at the game is unclear. Chief Lando emphasized that officers from the city and the Port Authority helped facilitate a safe exit for the crowd while working to contain the incident.

Pittsburgh Public Schools released a statement reaffirming the district’s commitment to student safety and thanking law‑enforcement personnel for their rapid response. The district said it will work closely with public safety partners and provide support services to students and staff affected by the event.

The incident has reignited concerns about security at youth sporting venues, prompting local officials and school administrators to review existing safety protocols. Community members and parents are calling for additional measures, such as increased staffing, enhanced surveillance, and stricter control of crowd behavior before and after games.

Police investigations remain ongoing, with authorities urging anyone with information to come forward. The stadium is expected to remain closed until a full safety assessment is completed.
