Father Patricio Sánchez killed when crucifix falls during livestreamed mass in Guayaquil

Father Patricio Sánchez Molinari, a member of the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer, died on Oct. 17 after a large crucifix detached from the wall behind the altar and struck him on the head during a livestreamed Mass at Perpetuo Socorro Church in the Archdiocese of Guayaquil, Ecuador.

The priest had just concluded a homily that warned congregants about the fleeting nature of life on earth. He urged believers to prioritize spiritual growth over distractions such as excessive phone use, telling the assembly, “One day, all of us here will also die… the quality time we give to God, to our brothers and sisters, to our families, is the best spent.”

According to witnesses and the livestream video, the crucifix fell abruptly as the priest began another prayer, his last spoken word during the liturgy being “Lord.” The congregation’s cries for help were captured before the broadcast cut off. Emergency responders arrived quickly, but Father Sánchez succumbed to his injuries later that evening.

The archdiocese released a statement describing the priest as “beloved” and saying he “has departed to the House of the Father to enjoy His presence and glory.” The statement concluded with the traditional prayer, “Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. May the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace.”

Police are investigating the incident, but officials have not provided an explanation for why the heavy crucifix became dislodged. Church authorities have not commented further on safety measures or the condition of the equipment used during the service.

The tragedy has sparked discussion about the safety of using large, heavy liturgical fixtures in spaces that are livestreamed to wide audiences. While the archdiocese mourns the loss of Father Sánchez, it also faces the challenge of ensuring that future ceremonies balance reverence with practical safety considerations.
