Explosion at CFB Wainwright kills at least seven and injures dozens
At least seven people were killed and dozens injured Saturday when an explosion struck Canadian Forces Base Wainwright in Alberta, triggering a massive fire that spread beyond the installation.
The incident, which occurred around 4 p.m. local time in a training area, prompted Defense Minister David McGuinty to say he was “saddened to share that there have been both fatalities and injuries as a result of an incident on the base.” Prime Minister Mark Carney added that his thoughts were with “all the brave women and men affected.”
Emergency responders described the fire as fueled by high winds that gusted up to 100 km/h, forcing flames to cross the base’s perimeter fence and ignite nearby vegetation. Multiple jurisdictions dispatched firefighters, and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police arrived shortly after the first calls at 4 p.m.
Medical facilities in Edmonton activated a Code Orange mass‑casualty protocol as patients were transferred from the overwhelmed base hospital and the Wainwright community hospital. The military hospital, a local hospital, and even a nearby high school were reported to be full, with ambulances and STARS air‑ambulance crews from Edmonton and Saskatoon providing additional support.
While officials have not released an official casualty count, social media posts from on‑scene witnesses suggested the number of injured could be as high as 150. Early speculation, cited by multiple military sources, indicates a live‑fire exercise may have struck a natural‑gas line or well, though the Department of National Defence has not confirmed this possibility.
The Canadian Armed Forces, along with provincial and federal agencies, continue to investigate the cause of the blast. Authorities say the priority remains caring for victims and notifying families, with updates expected as the investigation progresses.
