Elon Musk pours $276 million into Republican campaigns, becoming 2026 midterm’s top donor

Elon Musk has become the biggest known contributor in the 2026 U.S. midterm election cycle, directing $276 million to Republican candidates and political action committees since July.

The majority of the money – $158 million – was donated to the Senate Leadership Fund, the super‑PAC that backs Republican Senate races nationwide. A further $76 million flowed to America PAC, the group Musk founded in 2024 to run large‑scale get‑out‑the‑vote operations in seven Senate battleground states and nearly three dozen House contests.

Additional contributions included $20 million to the Congressional Leadership Fund for House Republicans, $10 million each to the Lone Star Liberty PAC supporting Texas Senate hopeful Ken Paxton and the Republican Governors Association, and $2 million to the Republican Attorneys General Association.

According to America PAC spokesman Andrew Romeo, the donations are intended to give the GOP a “fighting chance” in the upcoming elections. "If Democrats take control of Washington and win key gubernatorial and attorney‑general races this November, then America risks becoming a socialist, woke and borderless country," he said.

These figures were supplied by Musk’s representatives to the New York Times and corroborated by federal filing data ahead of the Thursday deadline. The totals represent a sharp reversal from Musk’s May 2025 statement that he would “do a lot less” in political spending.

Political analysts note that the $276 million infusion gives Republicans a sizable cash advantage over Democrats, who have raised just over $100 million from major liberal donors such as George and Alex Soros.

The money is already being deployed in field operations, with America PAC hiring thousands of canvassers and running digital media campaigns aimed at hard‑to‑reach voters, particularly in Texas, where Musk’s businesses have a significant presence.

As the midterm calendar nears its final weeks, the impact of Musk’s spending will be visible in campaign advertising, voter outreach and the overall financial health of GOP committees heading into Election Day.
