Elon Musk becomes largest spender in 2026 US midterm elections

Elon Musk, chief executive of Tesla and SpaceX, spent a total of $366 million on the 2026 United States midterm elections, making him the single largest political donor in the cycle.

The unprecedented outlay includes $76 million funneled through Musk’s own America PAC, a $158 million donation to the Senate Leadership Fund, $20 million to the Congressional Leadership Fund, and further contributions to the Republican Governors Association, the Republican Attorneys General Association and a $10 million grant to Lone Star Liberty PAC supporting Texas Senate candidate Ken Paxton.

Musk’s money arrived at a crucial moment. In September, he gave $158 million to the Senate Leadership Fund, which then directed $75 million to a newly formed Texas PAC backing Paxton. Two weeks later, an additional $83 million went to the same fund and was also passed to the Texas PAC. The influx allowed the fund to dominate television, radio and digital advertising in Texas, where a RealClearPolitics poll shows Paxton trailing Democratic nominee James Talarico by about 2 percentage points, 48.2 % to 46 %.

The House side saw similar generosity. Musk contributed $20 million to the Congressional Leadership Fund, which reported $94.4 million raised in the third quarter and entered October with $155.2 million in cash on hand. By bolstering these super‑PACs, Musk has helped Republicans stay competitive in a landscape where many Democratic candidates have outraised their Republican opponents.

Republican strategists described Musk’s shift from high‑visibility rallies in 2024 to discreet financing as a “life raft” for the party. One strategist said the billionaire’s checks provide “more influence with fewer headaches,” noting that the funds are being used to finance ground operations and advertising in expanding battleground maps that now include states such as Kansas and South Carolina.

Democratic opponents have seized on Musk’s involvement, portraying him as an out‑of‑touch billionaire whose money threatens the integrity of elections. Representatives from the Democratic National Committee warned that Musk’s spending underscores the influence of wealthy donors on the political process.

Musk’s net worth has largely recovered after significant market losses early in the Trump administration, and his favorability rating remains net negative by 16 percentage points, according to Decision Desk HQ. Nonetheless, his financial backing stands as the biggest single contribution in American political history.

With the November 3 ballot approaching, the impact of Musk’s $366 million spending will become clearer as voters head to the polls in tightly contested Senate and House races nationwide.
