Delta signs deal with Amazon Leo for next‑generation in‑flight internet, bypasses Starlink
Delta Air Lines signed an agreement with Amazon Leo this week to equip its fleet with next‑generation satellite internet, with an initial rollout on 500 aircraft slated to begin in 2028.
The partnership promises passengers streaming‑grade video, real‑time photo and file uploads, and uninterrupted connectivity on both domestic and international routes, leveraging Amazon Leo’s low‑Earth‑orbit satellite network.
We do not want to be with Elon Musk. Trust me.
Delta CEO Ed Bastian made the remark in a public statement, suggesting personal dislike of SpaceX founder Elon Musk influenced the decision. Musk responded on social media, warning Bastian could lose his job over the move.
Delta’s choice arrives as most major U.S. carriers—United, Southwest, Alaska and American—have already adopted Starlink, which currently operates over 11,000 satellites and serves roughly 13 million customers worldwide. Those airlines tout faster speeds and broader coverage, and many already offer the service on hundreds of planes.
Amazon Leo, by contrast, operates 396 satellites in orbit and plans to expand its constellation to more than 3,200 satellites to achieve full global coverage. The airline’s rollout will therefore follow the network’s continued build‑out, with JetBlue expected to begin testing Leo service next year and Delta following a year later.
Delta’s in‑flight Wi‑Fi service was made free on most domestic flights in 2023, but passengers still contend with portal sign‑ins and occasional lag. The new Leo system promises to eliminate the portal experience, delivering a seamless connection akin to a home broadband line, according to the airline’s press release.
Industry analysts note that while Starlink’s extensive satellite fleet gives it a head start, competition from Amazon could drive innovation and lower costs for airline passengers. The rivalry also highlights how corporate leadership personalities can shape technology procurement decisions.
Amazon expects its satellite network to be fully operational as it scales toward the 3,236‑satellite target, a timeline that aligns with Delta’s 2028 installation schedule.
