Delta passenger steals airport tug at John Wayne Airport in Santa Ana

On Tuesday, Oct. 6, 2026, a 26‑year‑old Delta Air Lines passenger named Jay Barr entered the restricted ramp area of John Wayne Airport in Santa Ana, California, and commandeered an Alaska Airlines baggage tug, driving it toward Gate 7 before crashing into a utility cart.

The breach began around 5:30 p.m. when Barr slipped through an access door at Gate 12, descended stairs and entered the airfield reserved for ground crews. He took control of an Alliance Ground International tug assigned to Alaska Airlines, maneuvering it across the tarmac and backing up near an aircraft before the crash.

Airport officials said Barr then attempted to board an American Airlines lavatory service truck. Airport Police Services apprehended him before he could gain access to the vehicle. He was placed under arrest on suspicion of vehicle theft, trespassing and vandalism, and subsequently transported to a local hospital for a medical evaluation.

John Wayne Airport spokesperson Anna Sophia Servin confirmed that the incident caused a brief disruption but did not impact arriving or departing flights. "There were no impacts to operations," the statement read. Delta Airlines issued a statement emphasizing a zero‑tolerance policy for unlawful behavior and said the airline is cooperating fully with law‑enforcement authorities.

Sgt. Gerard McCann of the Orange County Sheriff’s Department described the incident as a “joyride” that lasted roughly ten minutes. While the exact cause of the breach remains under investigation, officials have not confirmed whether Barr was intoxicated at the time.

The airport’s security team is reviewing procedures to prevent future unauthorized access to the ramp, and law‑enforcement agencies are pursuing charges against the suspect. No injuries were reported, and airport operations returned to normal shortly after the tug was secured.
