Culver City bus driver Bruce Rodriguez killed after shift, suspect arrested
Bruce Rodriguez, a 42‑year‑old driver with 12 years of service at Culver CityBus, was shot and killed shortly after 5 p.m. on Thursday while completing his route near the intersection of Centinela and Mitchell avenues on the Culver City‑Los Angeles border.
Police say the shooter, a male passenger who appeared intoxicated, confronted Rodriguez over directions and then produced a handgun, firing multiple shots. Rodriguez was rushed to a nearby hospital but was pronounced dead from his injuries.
LAPD Capt. Eric Eppolito told reporters the altercation began when the passenger objected to a missed exit. The suspect fled on foot or by bicycle, and no weapon was recovered at the scene.
Authorities arrested 55‑year‑old Jose Zayas on Friday afternoon in the 3600 block of Motor Avenue. He was booked on suspicion of murder, and a bail package of $3 million was set. The FBI Violent Crime Apprehension Task Force assisted the West Bureau Homicide Division in locating and apprehending Zayas.
Rodriguez’s family described him as a newlywed father who loved being a dad. He left a wife, Sandy, a three‑year‑old son he was teaching to play baseball, and a six‑month‑old baby boy. He was the primary provider for his household and also helped care for his elderly parents who lived in the same home.
The community responded quickly, with a GoFundMe campaign raising more than $87,000 to cover funeral costs and support the family. Colleagues remembered Rodriguez as warm, easy‑going, and dedicated to passenger safety, often diffusing tense situations and handing out Hot Wheels cars to young riders.
Culver CityBus suspended all service through the weekend to allow employees to grieve and to honor Rodriguez’s memory. City officials offered crisis support to transit workers and asked riders to be kind to operators as they return to service.
The investigation remains ongoing, with detectives continuing to review evidence from the scene. Authorities have not released further details about the suspect’s motives beyond the reported confrontation over directions.
