Chris Sale’s relief inning helps Braves clinch wild‑card series on Oct. 2, 2026
The Atlanta Braves clinched the National League Wild Card series on Oct. 2, 2026, beating the Philadelphia Phillies 6‑2 in the decisive Game 3.
The victory completed a three‑game sweep and sent Atlanta to the NL Division Series, marking the Braves’ first playoff series win over the Phillies. A dramatic relief appearance by left‑hander Chris Sale, who had not been scheduled to pitch, proved pivotal as he recorded the final four outs.
Michael Harris II, Ozzie Albies and Matt Olson each contributed a home run, providing the offensive firepower that propelled the Braves to the win.
Sale had already made headlines in Game 1, delivering a playoff career high of six and one‑third innings with nine strikeouts. He threw 95 pitches on Tuesday and added 21 more on Thursday, setting the stage for his unexpected role in the elimination game.
“I was not going to go to Chris Sale and ask him if he could pitch tonight,” manager Walt Weiss told reporters. “I didn’t want to put him in that position because I knew that even if he was hanging, he would tell me yes. So, I was not going to bring it up. … But literally as soon as I stepped into my office this afternoon, he was sitting in the chair across from my desk, and he looked at me, and he said, ‘I feel amazing.’ I said, ‘Well, let’s talk.’”
Weiss later praised Sale’s effort, noting, “I told him there was a good chance he was going to get the top of the order at some point in the eighth or ninth. It worked out that way. I was hoping he only had to go one, but he had to get to four outs. What a warrior, man.”
With the series secured, the Braves now turn their attention to the NL Division Series, where Sale’s availability for a potential start against the Los Angeles Dodgers remains uncertain.
