Bruce Blakeman accuses Kathy Hochul of abandoning Cornell Seven probe during NY governor debate
Republican gubernatorial candidate Bruce Blakeman attacked New York Governor Kathy Hochul during a televised debate on Oct. 13, 2026, accusing her of failing to pursue an independent investigation into the Cornell Seven sexual assault claims.
Blakeman, who serves as Nassau County Executive and a trustee of Cornell University, said Hochul had already prejudged the case and questioned her actions as the state’s governor and a major funder of the university, which receives roughly $150 million annually from New York. “Where were you? What did you do for the trustee of Cornell University?” he asked, adding, “Shame on you.”
Hochul responded that blaming her for the alleged fraternity assault was “pretty pathetic,” rejecting the charge that she had neglected her duties as a trustee. She did not elaborate on any plans for an investigation.
The exchange unfolded amid a broader, combative debate in which Blakeman repeatedly targeted Hochul over high energy costs, taxes and rising antisemitism. A body‑language expert, Dr. Lillian Glass, noted that Hochul appeared defensive and dismissive, while Blakeman displayed visible anger throughout the segment.
Legal scholars have pointed out that the district attorney previously dropped the Cornell Seven case, citing insufficient evidence, which complicates any call for a new probe. Nonetheless, Blakeman framed the issue as a matter of accountability for public officials who sit on university boards.
Political analysts say the confrontation could shape voter perceptions ahead of the November election, especially among constituents concerned about campus safety and governmental transparency. Both campaigns have yet to issue further statements, leaving the debate over the Cornell Seven investigation to play out on the campaign trail.
