Bishnoi Syndicate’s Ordered Hit on Sikh Leader Sparks International Law‑Enforcement Action

The killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a prominent Sikh leader, shocked the community of Surrey, British Columbia, when he was gunned down outside the Guru Nanak Singh Gurdwara in June 2023. Investigations quickly linked the murder to the Bishnoi criminal network, a transnational organization with roots in India that has been involved in drug trafficking, extortion, kidnapping and other violent acts across North America and Europe.

Law enforcement agencies in Canada, led by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), and in the United States, coordinated a joint operation that resulted in the arrest of several high‑profile members of the Bishnoi enterprise. The primary targets, Lawrence Bishnoi—currently incarcerated in India—and his North American lieutenant Satinderjeet “Goldy Brar” Singh, are alleged to have ordered the 2023 assassination. The RCMP described the Bishnoi group’s tactics as a campaign of terror aimed at Sikh and Indian diaspora communities to further their extortion schemes.

Federal charges in the United States allege that Bishnoi and Brar directed the murder to intimidate and suppress dissent within the diaspora. The FBI’s Operation Hard Ball, a multi‑year investigation, also uncovered massive drug‑smuggling operations. Prosecutors detailed a network that moved hundreds of kilograms of cocaine and methamphetamine from the United States into Canada using long‑haul semi‑trucks, farm vehicles and concealed shipments, seizing roughly 1,000 kg of cocaine and a kilogram of heroin in the process.

The coordinated arrests spanned three indictments and involved 24 individuals, including leaders who allegedly managed the Bishnoi enterprise from prison in India. The operation seized about 1,000 kg of cocaine, $40,000 in cash, a dozen firearms and a kilogram of heroin, sending a clear message that international cooperation can disrupt sophisticated crime syndicates.

Officials emphasized that the crackdown is a crucial step toward safeguarding public safety and protecting minority communities from targeted violence. RCMP Commissioner Mark Duheme highlighted the importance of cross‑border collaboration, noting that dismantling the leadership structure of these groups reduces their capacity to terrorize and exploit vulnerable populations. The case also underscores the broader threat posed by organized crime networks that blend drug trafficking with politically motivated violence.

While the Bishnoi syndicate has been designated a terrorist entity by the Canadian government, the ongoing legal proceedings serve as a reminder that accountability extends beyond national borders. The arrests demonstrate a unified stance against transnational crime, reinforcing the rule of law and the protection of fundamental freedoms for all citizens.
