Billy Joel's motorcycle collection auction set for Nov. 20‑21 at New York's Javits Center

Gooding Christie’s announced that over 70 motorcycles from singer‑songwriter Billy Joel’s personal collection will be auctioned without reserve at the inaugural Retromobile New York sale on Nov. 20‑21, held at New York’s Javits Center.

The auction, which will feature a mix of vintage, side‑car and custom bikes, is expected to draw both Joel fans and motor‑cycling enthusiasts. A share of the proceeds will benefit the Joel Foundation, a charity that supports music‑education programs and public women’s health initiatives.

Among the most talked‑about items is a 1978 Triumph T140 Bonneville that Madison Square Garden presented to Joel after he logged a record‑setting 150 sold‑out shows at the venue. The bike is painted with a keyboard motif on the tank and comes with a matching helmet that lists every show and year he performed at the Garden. Gooding Christie’s estimates the bike could fetch between $10,000 and $15,000.

The collection also includes a 1982 Ducati 900 Mike Hailwood replica, marketed by Ducati to commemorate the legendary 1978 Isle of Man victory, with an estimated value of $15,000‑$25,000. A fully restored 1975 Ducati 750 Sport, described as “one of the most beautiful motorcycles ever conceived,” is expected to draw $25,000‑$35,000.

Other marques represented are BMW, Moto Guzzi, Harley‑Davidson, Yamaha, Honda and Kawasaki, providing a broad snapshot of Joel’s decades‑long passion for two‑wheelers. “The exciting thing is all the motorcycles are being sold without reserve,” Gooding said, emphasizing that the highest bidder will win each lot regardless of price.

Joel, 77, issued a statement through the auction house, noting his lifelong love of bikes built with meticulous detail. “I’ve always been drawn to bikes built by people who cared about getting every detail right,” he said. “I’ve loved building this collection. Now it’s someone else’s turn to hit the road.”

The auction will run over two days, with bidders able to place live bids on the floor and online. Proceeds earmarked for the Joel Foundation will support recording‑studio projects in schools, music‑therapy programs and other community initiatives, adding a charitable dimension to the high‑octane event.
