Alex Ovechkin announces 2026-27 will be his final NHL season

Washington Capitals forward Alex Ovechkin announced on Monday that the 2026-27 season will be his final year in the National Hockey League.

The 41‑year‑old confirmed the decision in the locker room before the team’s third game, telling teammates it was a family‑driven choice and that he wanted them to know the news first. He described the announcement as “sad, but it is what it is.”

Ovechkin, who has spent his entire 22‑year career with Washington since 2005, signed a one‑year contract in July that carries a $1 million base salary, a $3.25 million signing bonus and up to $4.75 million in performance bonuses.

He entered the season as the NHL’s all‑time leading goal scorer, having broken Wayne Gretzky’s record in April 2025 and finishing with 929 regular‑season goals, 759 assists and nine 50‑goal seasons. His 77 playoff goals rank 12th all time, placing him within reach of the top‑10 if Washington reaches the postseason.

The Capitals opened the campaign on Friday with a 5‑2 win over defending Stanley Cup champion Carolina Hurricanes, though Ovechkin did not register a point in either of the first two games. The team’s home opener is set for Wednesday against the Pittsburgh Penguins, a matchup Ovechkin hopes to enjoy with his veteran teammates.

“We have an unbelievable team this year, 82 games left,” Ovechkin said. “Let’s make the playoffs. Let’s have fun and enjoy the moment.” He urged younger players to savor the present and promised to do “some special things” during his final season.

Beyond the rink, Ovechkin has confirmed plans to return to Russia after retirement and has previously appeared in advertising supporting President Vladimir Putin, a detail that continues to draw media attention.

As the Capitals look to build on their early success, Ovechkin’s farewell season will be closely watched by fans and analysts alike, marking the end of a career that reshaped the franchise and the sport.
