Aces forward’s illegal throw leads to technical foul on Fever coach in playoff loss
On Thursday, October 1, 2026, the Las Vegas Aces defeated the Indiana Fever 94‑83 in the first round of the WNBA playoffs at Michelob ULTRA Arena in Indianapolis.
Midway through the first half, Aces forward Brianna Turner locked the arm of Fever guard Lexie Hull and threw her to the court floor. Despite the rough contact, officials called a personal foul on Hull rather than on Turner.
When Fever head coach Stephanie White signaled for a timeout to contest the call, the referees refused to acknowledge the challenge request. The game resumed, the Aces were awarded free throws, and the Fever’s appeal was denied.
White then left the coach’s box, approached mid‑court and argued with the officials. The referees responded by assessing a technical foul to White for “unsportsmanlike conduct.” The technical added a free throw for the Aces and a $500 fine could be levied against White if the penalty stands.
White later told the Indianapolis Star that the officials “weren’t talking to us” and described the officiating as “terrible.” The league announced it will review the technical foul, a step that could lead to its rescission or enforcement.
The incident sparked a wave of criticism on social media, with fans and commentators describing the lack of a review as “wild” and “a WWE‑style move.” Many called for clearer procedures around coach’s challenges and stricter enforcement of player safety rules.
In addition to the Hull incident, the fourth quarter saw Fever star Caitlin Clark appear to receive an elbow to the mouth that caused bleeding, but no foul was called. Clark later showed the referee her tooth but received no explanation.
The Fever’s elimination ends their playoff run, and the WNBA’s pending review of White’s technical foul will be the next development to watch as the league evaluates its officiating protocols.
