60 Minutes Correspondents Resolve to Stay in Wake of Firing Storm
Senior reporters Lesley Stahl, Bill Whitaker and Jon Wertheim have told their CBS News colleagues that they will stay on the long‑running program, saying they do not want to see the iconic newsmagazine “die.”
The trio’s decision comes after the network’s abrupt termination of several executives and reporters, including former executive producer Tanya Simon and senior reporter Sharyn Alfonsi. The firings sparked accusations that CBS was trying to reshape the show’s culture under new leadership.
In a joint memo, the correspondents expressed heartbreak over the loss of “strong leaders who everyone respected,” and underscored that “newsrooms are not supposed to be run like dictatorships.” They clarified that their return is not an endorsement of the current power structure but a pledge to “repair and preserve” the program’s reputation.
Key to their decision was a letter from newly appointed executive producer Nick Bilton. The executive’s memo highlighted how Stahl, Whitaker and Wertheim are “core” to the show’s success and promised that CBS would never allow ownership to dictate the stories the team covers. Their statements also praise the promotion of producer Maria Gavrilovic to senior producer.
Stahl, Whitaker and Wertheim emphasized that they hope to “continue doing the work that made this show what it is” – “independent, fearless journalism and storytelling” – adding that if that promise cannot be honored they will depart.
For now the correspondents affirmed they are staying “for our audience, the millions who watch us with a loyal but critical eye. We’re staying for our teams, and all the teams.” They concluded that the show’s home is where they work, and abandoning it would be unbearable.
Season 59 of 60 Minutes is slated to begin broadcasting in September. The team’s message is clear: the survival of the show hinges on a shared commitment to high‑stakes reporting, and the seasoned reporters stand ready to lead that effort.
