ZOA chief says Trump’s Netanyahu endorsement underscores Iran fight but Israeli election remains tight
Morton Klein, the national president of the Zionist Organization of America, told Newsmax on Oct. 19, 2026 that President Donald Trump’s explicit endorsement of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reflects a joint fight against Iran, while cautioning that the Israeli election remains close and Netanyahu’s re‑election is uncertain.
The remarks come days after Trump posted a "complete and total" endorsement of Netanyahu on Truth Social, praising the Israeli leader as a “Great Warrior Prime Minister” and an “even greater partner” in the effort to counter Iran’s nuclear ambitions. Trump warned that a change in Israeli leadership could force the United States to shoulder the burden of confronting Tehran alone.
Netanyahu responded on social media, thanking Trump and pledging to “complete the mission” against Iran alongside the U.S. president. He described Trump as Israel’s “greatest friend in the White House” and emphasized that the partnership is essential for preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons.
Washington’s backing is notable because it marks the first time a sitting U.S. president has publicly endorsed a candidate in an Israeli election. Analysts note that polls show Netanyahu’s right‑wing bloc falling short of the 61‑seat majority needed to form a government, fueling speculation that the endorsement could sway undecided voters.
Klein, however, reminded viewers that even with high‑level U.S. support, the Israeli electorate remains divided. He pointed to the fragmented party system and recent shifts in public sentiment, suggesting that the outcome remains unpredictable as the Oct. 27 vote approaches.
The endorsement also raised concerns among opponents who view foreign interference as inappropriate. Critics argue that U.S. involvement could complicate Israel’s internal political dynamics and affect coalition negotiations after the vote.
As election day nears, Klein said the ZOA will monitor the results closely and continue to advocate for a strong U.S.–Israel alliance focused on counter‑Iran efforts, regardless of which candidate ultimately assumes the premiership.
