Midland Mass Shooting Leaves One Dead and Ten Injured

Early on June 12, a tragic incident unfolded near West Wall Street in Midland, Texas. At approximately 8:00 a.m., a shooting broke out inside an automotive collision center. The mayor announced that alarms were triggered and law enforcement responded promptly.

The episode involved a single suspect, later identified as Victor Mata Villarreal. He was 45 years old and held in the city’s records for an attempted capital murder of a peace officer. According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, Villarreal was found dead inside an abandoned veterinary clinic after an hours‑long standoff with police.

In total, eleven victims were confirmed, including the deceased. Nine victims were transported to Midland Memorial Hospital, three of whom required surgery. An additional ten were treated at other hospitals, with several discharged and others remaining in recovery. One city employee, Ed Scott, died in the shooting, leaving his colleagues and the city community in mourning.

Mayor Lori Blong confirmed that the "active shooter situation has ended" and that the suspect was “confirmed deceased.” She expressed her condolences to the victims and families: “Our thoughts and prayers are absolutely with the victims and with their families.”

The state police report indicated that the shooting began in one part of the city and moved to other locations in south Midland. Police were in a standoff with the gunman for nearly two hours before surrounding him in a nearby building. No law enforcement officers were injured during the confrontation.

Responding to the tragedy, Mayor Blong directed all donations through the United Way of Midland. The city has also coordinated with the West Texas Food Bank to provide meals to affected residents. While a blood drive was not immediately necessary, the mayor invited community members to donate blood in the future if needed.

A reunification center has been established at Midland Regional Hospital, where family members can receive information and support. Community leaders have called for unity and prayer spaces to help residents process the event.

The incident marks the third mass shooting that Midland has experienced in recent years. Six years earlier, a shooter killed seven people across Midland and nearby Odessa. The current tragedy adds to the city’s history of violence and prompts discussions around public safety and community resilience.

Authorities have underscored that no additional suspects have been found and the investigation is ongoing. The Texas Rangers are assisting local law enforcement in determining the motive and additional details about the suspect’s past.

The local economic impact has also been addressed. Owners of small businesses in the West Wall Street corridor are reopening, with many calling for continued support from visitors and businesses across the Southwest.

In the wake of the shooting, residents are rallying together, sharing resources, and expressing solidarity through both formal and informal channels. While the city mourns, it also demonstrates resilience through organized assistance efforts and a clear focus on community healing.
