Local Bank-Email Scam Leads to $49,675 Wire Transfer – Lapeer County Victim Recovers Majority

Phishing Email Results in Nearly Fifty‑Ten Thousand Dollar Loss in Lapeer County

A 69‑year‑old resident of Lapeer County, Michigan, fell victim to a sophisticated phishing scheme that began with an email claiming her bank had been charged $350. The message urged her to enter her banking details to resolve a supposed fraud alert.

After she provided her login information, the attackers gained access to her account and transferred $49,675 to a Wells Fargo account located in San Francisco, California. The recipient’s name on the account was a fabricated elderly woman from Missouri.

Investigators from the Lapeer County Sheriff’s Office began the inquiry on March 6, following the woman’s report. Using digital forensics, detectives traced the wire transfer to the California account, obtained an court order, and secured a freeze on the funds. The Wells Fargo account still held $43,653.26, which the sheriff’s office is preparing to refund to the victim once the legal process is complete. The remaining balance has not yet been returned.

The case is a stark reminder of how scammers craft emails that mimic legitimate bank communications, leveraging familiar language and urgent tones to coerce recipients into disclosing credentials. The Federal Trade Commission warns that phishing messages may impersonate banks or trusted services and request confirmation of personal or financial information.

To protect against similar threats, the sheriff’s office recommends that individuals—particularly older adults—refrain from clicking links in suspicious emails. Instead, they should use the bank’s official app, website, the card number, or a verified branch number to check account details directly.

Law enforcement officials emphasized the urgency of educating families about email scams and urged residents to discuss safe online practices with loved ones. They noted a significant rise in attacks targeting vulnerable adults in the county, urging the community to remain vigilant.

While the majority of the stolen funds have been recovered, this incident underscores the evolving tactics of cybercriminals and the need for continued public awareness and robust security protocols within financial institutions.
