July 7, 2026: Heavy Rains Claim Lives in North China as Tropical Storm Maysak Ravages South China and Vietnam
Heavy Rains in Northern China
State media reported that heavy rains on July 5 swept across northern China, causing deadly flash floods. Two villagers in the eastern part of Inner Mongolia lost their lives – one drowned while herding cattle and the other fell into fast‑moving water while driving a herd away. In the neighboring Liaoning province, three additional fatalities occurred in Fushun city after a severe rainstorm dumped up to 32.9 centimetres of rain in a short period, turning streets into lakes and prompting the relocation of about 3 600 residents.
Tropical Storm Maysak Impacts Southern China and Vietnam
At the same time, Tropical Storm Maysak intensified as it moved northward into China’s Guangxi region. After making landfall the previous night, the storm brought winds of 101 kilometres per hour to Vietnam’s Quang Ninh province and weakened to tropical‑storm strength while crossing inland. In Guangxi’s Fangchenggang city, rivers overflowed and flooded streets, submerging cars up to their roofs. Local video showed rescue crews deploying inflatable boats to reach stranded residents, and officials described the flooding as the most severe in two decades.
In Vietnam, the storm toppled trees and ripped metal roofs off buildings in the town of Mong Cai. Crews used chainsaws and heavy machinery to clear debris and reopen roads after the winds subsided. The storm also uprooted trees in the border city of Dongxing, adding to the widespread damage along the coast.
Both events forced emergency responses across the affected regions. In northern China, authorities evacuated thousands and deployed rescue teams to assist those trapped by floodwaters. In southern China and Vietnam, local governments mobilized rescue boats, emergency personnel, and community volunteers to aid residents and restore essential services.
Looking Ahead
The twin weather emergencies underscore the challenges that extreme rainfall and tropical storms pose to densely populated areas. As climate patterns shift, communities in both China and Vietnam may need to strengthen flood defenses, improve early‑warning systems, and develop coordinated response strategies to protect lives and property.
