Dearborn Mall Shooting Investigation Ongoing as Police Seek Answers
Dearborn, Michigan – An active investigation is under way after a shooting at the Fairlane Town Center mall claimed two lives and wounded a third on Friday, July 3. Dearborn Police confirmed the incident occurred around 1:25 p.m. local time and that the victims were taken to Corewell Health Dearborn Hospital for treatment.
According to a police statement released on Instagram, the shooting stemmed from a dispute between two groups of people. "We confirm that the incident stemmed from a dispute between two groups of people and was not a random act of violence," the department said. Police added that no additional threats to the public are currently known.
Law enforcement officials have asked residents and visitors to avoid the area while officers secure the scene and conduct their investigation. "This is an active and ongoing investigation," the department emphasized, urging anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has further information to contact the Dearborn Police Department at 313‑943‑2240.
Dearborn Mayor Abdullah Hammoud reiterated the city’s focus on safety, posting on Facebook that the mall should remain clear while the police continue their work. "Please stay clear of Fairlane Mall while the police secure and investigate this incident," he wrote.
Police Chief Issa Shahin praised the swift response from first responders, regional and federal partners—including the University of Michigan‑Dearborn and the Michigan State Police—and assured the community that those responsible will be held fully accountable. "Shootings and other acts of violence are entirely unacceptable," Shahin said.
The mall was placed on lockdown as investigators searched for the suspect. CBS Detroit, citing police sources, reported that the lockdown may have extended to nearby Henry Ford Medical Center Fairlane. The investigation is ongoing, with officers interviewing persons of interest and witnesses.
