Deadly Shooting Shuts Down River North Intersection in Chicago

Chicago police launched a massive investigation Wednesday after a violent incident devastated the River North area, a hub of hotels, office buildings, and nightlife. The shooting occurred around 3:20 a.m. in the 500 block of North State Street, just off the bustling Grand Avenue corridor.

According to officials, two men—identified as a 30‑year‑old and a 65‑year‑old—were outside when they heard gunfire and felt the impact of the shots. The younger victim was struck multiple times and later transported to a nearby hospital in critical condition before being pronounced dead. The older man suffered gunshot wounds to his foot and was taken to the same facility, where he remains in fair condition.

Responding officers quickly erected extensive police barriers, laying more than 110 yellow evidence markers to preserve the scene. Windows of an adjacent office building were left riddled with bullet holes, and detectives combed through the area, canvassing nearby businesses for any witnesses or surveillance footage.

"We have a significant police presence on site," a spokesperson for the Chicago Police Department said during a brief update. "We are currently interviewing witnesses and reviewing video from surrounding cameras to piece together exactly what happened."

The intersection remained closed for several hours, causing major traffic disruptions across both State Street and Grand Avenue. By roughly 7:45 a.m., officers had cleared the scene enough to allow traffic to resume, but the area still bore the visual scars of the attack.

No arrests have been made, and the investigation remains ongoing. Police have not disclosed any motive or identified a suspect, urging anyone with additional information to contact the department’s tip line.

This incident adds to a series of recent violent events challenging Chicago’s efforts to maintain public safety, especially in densely populated commercial districts. Community leaders have called for increased security measures and better coordination between businesses and law‑enforcement to prevent future tragedies.

Authorities continue to urge residents and visitors to stay informed of any updates as the investigation proceeds.
