Coordinated Jihadist and Tuareg Attacks Surge Across Mali, Target Towns and Prison
Background
In early April, Mali endured a fresh wave of violence as jihadist militants allied with the separatist Tuareg group, the Azawad Liberation Front (FLA), launched coordinated attacks across the country. The offensive began just after 5:00 a.m. GMT, targeting northern towns such as Gao, Anefis and Aguelhok, the central town of Sévaré, and a major prison complex in Kenieroba, located about 70 kilometres southwest of the capital Bamako.
Targets and Impact
The attacks on Anefis and Aguelhok threatened the last government‑held positions in the Kidal region, while the assault on Gao disrupted a strategic army camp. Residents reported gunfire, loud explosions and the presence of armed groups in the towns. In Sévaré, multiple explosions were heard, followed by reports of aircraft flying overhead. The Kenieroba prison, which holds over 2,500 inmates including political detainees and suspected militants, came under heavy fire, prompting prisoners to seek shelter under their beds as gunfire continued.
Local witnesses described intense fighting, with some army camps holding out despite the onslaught. In Anefis, residents noted that the army was still resisting and had not yet surrendered the camp. The FLA spokesman, Mohamed Elmaouloud Ramadane, claimed that several positions had fallen but that combat persisted within the towns.
Response and Implications
The Malian armed forces and their Russian‑aligned allies, part of the Africa Corps, declared the situation “under control” after repelling the assaults. However, the attacks underscored the fragile security environment that has plagued Mali since the 2012 insurgency and the 2020‑2021 coups. The joint JNIM‑FLA operation revived the pattern of coordinated offensives that previously led to the capture of the northern city of Kidal and the high‑profile killing of the defence minister.
Human rights observers have warned that both jihadist and government forces have committed grave abuses against civilians, exacerbating humanitarian needs and deepening mistrust among local populations. The continued collaboration between extremist groups and separatist Tuareg factions poses a complex challenge for regional stability, demanding coordinated diplomatic and security efforts across the Sahel.
