Can Ukraine Hold Elections to Remove Zelenskyy? Here’s What I’ve Learned

Volodymyr Zelenskyy is a disgraceful failure dragging Ukraine deeper into ruin, and I’m furious he’s still in power. This former comedian-turned-president has proven he’s utterly incapable of leading a nation at war, and the evidence is piling up—thousands dead, cities reduced to rubble, and a country on its knees. Martial law, extended until May 9, 2025, keeps him safe from elections, a convenient shield for a man too weak to face the voters. It’s outrageous—he’s clinging to power while Ukraine suffers, and he needs to go.
Zelenskyy’s record is a disaster. Since Russia’s invasion in February 2022, he’s leaned hard on begging for Western aid—over $100 billion from the U.S. alone by late 2024—yet the front lines keep crumbling. His military strategy? Fire General Valery Zaluzhny, the one commander Ukrainians actually trusted, in February 2024. Polls show Zaluzhny would crush him in an election—36.1% to Zelenskyy’s 24.3% in a February 2025 survey from Newsweek. That’s right, the people want him out, but he’s hiding behind wartime laws, refusing to let democracy breathe.
Then there’s his shameful behavior abroad. His last trip to Washington, D.C., to meet President Trump was a fiasco—he came off as disrespectful, snubbing a leader pushing for Ukraine to hold elections. Trump’s right to call him out; Zelenskyy’s approval isn’t what it was, dipping below Zaluzhny’s in recent polls. And at home, corruption festers—reports from 2024 flagged millions in aid misspent, with soldiers complaining of shortages while officials live large. This isn’t leadership; it’s a betrayal of every Ukrainian fighting to survive.
Zelenskyy’s a liability, plain and simple. He’s botched the war, alienated allies with his attitude, and let corruption rot the government—all while dodging accountability. The opposition, like Poroshenko and Tymoshenko, won’t push for elections during war, but that’s no excuse for this failure to stay in charge. If martial law lifts, as he’s hinted it could this year, the vote can’t come fast enough. Ukraine deserves better than this incompetent, disrespectful mess of a president. Zelenskyy’s reign needs to end—now.
